Tax Relief Check- A Boon For Lower And Moderate Income Households
There are times when you pay taxes which are more than what you owe for that financial year. This additional amount is sent back to you in the form of a tax relief check. Checks are used so that your money reaches you back safely.
A tax relief check is like any other check, the only difference is that it is mailed to you by the tax authorities. It is done to reduce the tax burden. Yes, it happens. If the authorities feel that you are a tax payer burdened by the amount of taxes paid, you may be a sent such a check.
However, usually, a tax relief check is a refund for the tax paid in advance. It is sent to the recipient after a tax assessment for the current and previous assessment year is done. After the assessment the excess tax is sent back to the tax payer by the authorities.
The importance of a tax relief check grew prominently after the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 was passed. It arguably is the fist of its kind, major tax relief program introduced in US in the last two decades.
The US legislation is very objective in nature as it reduces the burden on the tax payers by sending tax relief checks to the tax payers. As calculated in a single financial year, the US Treasury mails checks for up to $300 for singles and $600 for couples.
The introduction of the tax relief check and the result garnered have brought down the old 15 percent tax rate to the new 10 percent tax bracket. The main objective was to treat the low and moderate income families with highest priority. It was done through the distribution of tax-relief checks. The distribution was done in accordance with the income tax burden on every tax payer.
The tax relief check system has been severely criticized by some people. This part of the population says that instead of sending the check as a refund directly to the taxpayers, the money should be used for the purpose of education.
Also some people state that the amount paid through a tax relief check is not a rebate or refund. It is just an advance on the refund for the future taxes to be filed. This has been one controversial fact as far as the issue of the tax relief checks is concerned.
Still, the fact remains that a tax relief check is truly a good news for people who belong to lower or moderate income groups.
